How Sauna Hats Work To Protect Your Head, Hair, and Ears from the Heat

Over recent years I have found that saunas are a great way to relax and spend time with my friends. Arriving in Wales after a 3 hour drive on a cold winter’s night and heading to a beach sauna is wonderful.

There, we are cocooned by the warmth, whilst the sauna hut is buffetted by the wind. It really does feel like stepping off the world for a while. Not only that but saunas offer a wealth of health benefits, from improving circulation to strengthening your immune system.

The high temperatures can, however, sometimes be a challenge for sensitive areas like your head, hair, and ears. That’s where sauna hats come in. These humble yet heroic accessories are designed to enhance your sauna experience by providing protection and comfort.

Since I announced that I will (shortly) be selling sauna hats on Amazon.com, I’ve had LOTS of questions about how they work. And here I explain more!

Why Your Head Needs Protection in the Sauna

The average sauna operates at temperatures between 150°F and 190°F (65°C to 88°C). While these conditions are brilliant for sweating out toxins and relaxing muscles, they’re not exactly a day at the beach for your head and hair.

The scalp is particularly sensitive to heat, and prolonged exposure can leave you feeling like you’ve stuck your head in a microwave.

Your hair, too, can suffer under extreme heat. High temperatures are like kryptonite to natural oils, leaving hair dry, brittle, and prone to breakage.

The heat can weaken the bonds in hair extensions. And as coloured hair is more porous than virgin hair, the dry heat of a sauna can leech moisure from it.

And let’s not forget your ears — those poor little appendages can get super hot and red.

But it’s by no means doom and gloom! Sauna hats to the rescue!

Soon to be available on Amazon.com - just type “sauna hat” in the search bar!

How Sauna Hats Work

Sauna hats are typically made from materials like wool or felt, which are excellent at regulating temperature. Mine is no exception! It is made from 100% wool with a 100% wool felt trim and it comes with a 100% cotton storage bag for your bits and bobs whilst in the sauna!

Key Features of Sauna Hats

  1. Thermal Insulation: Wool and felt trap air, which acts as a buffer to slow down the heat transfer from the sauna to your head. It’s like wearing a personal cloud of coolness.

  2. Breathability: Despite being insulating, these materials let your scalp breathe. None of us wants a sauna on our heads while in a sauna.

  3. Moisture Absorption: Natural fibres like wool wick away moisture, keeping your head dry and comfy.

By maintaining a cooler temperature around your head, sauna hats help prevent overheating, allowing you to stay in the sauna for longer and bask in the beautiful sauna glow!

Benefits of Wearing a Sauna Hat

  1. Protects you hair: One of the biggest perks of wearing a sauna hat is protecting your hair. By shielding your hair from the sauna’s heat, a hat helps keep the natural oils intact. This means less dryness, fewer split ends, and hair that is super happy!

  2. Prevents overheating: A sauna hat keeps your head cool, and when your head’s cool, the rest of you can keep calm and carry on. No more cutting sessions short because you’re overheating, uncomfortable and dizzy.

  3. Shields your ears: Your ears will thank you for the protection. Without a hat, they’re left to bear the brunt of the heat, and let’s face it, no one wants ears that feel like they’ve been roasted.

  4. Enhances comfort: Beyond protection, sauna hats add a touch of comfort when you’re lying on a hard wooden sauna bench. Your head feels less exposed - in the same way that it does when wearing a sun hat.

How To Choose the Right Sauna Hat

When selecting a sauna hat, go for natural, high-quality materials like wool or felt. Avoid anything synthetic unless you’re aiming for a sweaty science experiment on your head!

Sauna Hat Keeps You Cool

In a nutshell!

Sauna hats are a brilliantly simple way to improve your sauna experience. By protecting your head, hair, and ears from extreme heat, they ensure you can enjoy the benefits of the sauna for longer, without discomfort. I’ve tried taking a sauna both with, and without, a sauna hat - and I really struggle if I don’t wear one.
